So … What Does the Fox REALLY Say?

For weeks now, the viral video “What Does the Fox Say” has taken the world by storm. Yes, not only have sales of fox Halloween costumes  exploded, the video itself has more than 124 million YouTube views, a rank of No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and multiple appearances on mainstream television shows such as Jimmy Fallon, Ellen DeGeneres and Today. The Ylvis brothers not only created a video meant for entertainment, but have left us all pondering the big question:

What does a fox REALLY say?

Before we get to that (and we will), here are some fun facts about foxes:

• There are 37 different species of foxes.
• A male fox is called a Reynard and a female fox is called a vixen.
• A baby fox is called a pup, kit or cub.
• The red fox is the most common fox, and it can be found on various continents. Foxes can live in various habitats, including mountains, tundras, deserts and even urban areas.
• On average, foxes live three years in the wild and between 10 to 12 years in captivity.  Foxes will eat anything, ranging from berries to birds.
• Foxes’ predators are eagles, coyotes, wolves, bears, lions and even humans.
• Red foxes have excellent senses of vision and smell. Foxes are nocturnal and have an excellent sense of hearing.

So, what do they say? Foxes have a distinctive night scream. In an effort to communicate with each other, the animals use various pitches and sounds.  According to experts, audible high pitched sounds can be heard between foxes during the mating season months — December through January. Some experts say that red foxes even use facial expressions to communicate amongst themselves.
